A Blast From The Past: Pro Skateboarder Ron Chatman

Posted on 27 January 2009

I was in a bar in Long Beach last week and ran into Ron Chatman and had to get a picture with him. Ron is an old school Long Beach skateboarder and a legend.

I wanted to add a few more things about Ron after I got the picture so I just pulled up some random stuff from him. He was right there at the beginning of the street skating era for sure!. Here we have a World Industries Ron Chatman from 1992. I have no idea about the graphic. Maybe he and his wife just had their first child? But the model is called “alone and nude”.

Ron Chatman, skate demo at Livingston concrete park 1992. According to my notes he was sponsored by Milk at this time. He had a nice style, and kept skating even after some of the others had stopped- as seen by this shot later in the day.

And last but not least I found this cool Ron Chatman sticker from 1990. I was in Desert Storm at this time wishing I was here in California but thats a story for a different time. This sticker is called the Ron Chatman Experience.

To leave you with something to feel warm and fuzzy with I thought I would put in Ron Chatmans Video part from Rubbish Heap. Rubbish Heap was a World Industries Skateboard Video that came out in 1989 and was 37 minutes long. Rubbish Heap is World Industries’ first video and is somewhat of a cult classic. There’s a ton of street action and a little mini-vert courtesy of Jesse Martinez. Also featured are a few practitioners of the lost art known as freestyle. World was pretty much a rag-tag team at this point and many of the featured skaters talents weren’t realized until after its release. Some, such as Jeremy Klein and Ron Chatman, skyrocketed to super-stardom while others, such as Billy Waldman and Chris Branagh, became known only for their child-star descent into obscurity. The soundtrack is almost non-existent which may thrill some and bore the hell out of others.

Blast from the past. Rubbish Heap is awesome. Clean. It rates up there with Shackle-me-not/Hokus/Blind video days/Questionable as a skate classic. I liked that it was minimalist in terms of music (though it did have a Nintendo soundtrack to Jeremy’s part). What happened to Duc and John? Those dudes ripped. Jeremy Klein’s part was epic. I still have that vid. I also still have the Ron Chatman ‘are you experienced’ deck from back in the days, one of the best WI releases – and I think I still have the shirt.

Those early WI ads with Ron and Jeremy were awesome. Thanks Ron. keep off those waxed curbs.
