The Legend Of Skateboarder Christian Hosoi

Christian Rosha Hosoi, born October 5, 1967, was the first rockstar of skateboarding. Also known as "Holmes", he dominated the skateboarding scene for most of the 1980's and was the ultimate vert skater. As vert faded out of favor in the 1990's, so did Hosoi. He began using drugs heavily and hit rock bottom when he was arrested in 2000. Hosoi spent five years in jail and emerged as a born again Christian. His legacy and unique style were never forgotten, and he was welcomed back into the skateboarding world with open arms. He could never be replaced, after all, who else could get away with wearing pink spandex biker shorts and still look so rad?

Hosoi fell in love with a skateboard at the age of five. In his teens, he quit school and spent his time at the Marina Del Ray Skatepark, where his father, Ivan "Pops" Hosoi was the manager. His talent quickly emerged. Here he is Powersliding, back in the day. Photo - Grant Brittan

In 2006, Hosoi’s life was chronicled in the documentary "Rising Son - The Legend of Skateboarder Christian Hosoi.” In it, old school skateboarders reminisce about their hero, who helped propel skateboarding into a major cultural influence.
