The underground skateboarding documentary The Search for Animal Chin is BACK! Stacy Peralta, who released the once made for VHS film which came out in 1987 and features interviews with skateboarding legends such as Tony Hawk and Tommy Guerrero, is re-releasing his 1980s video as a free download through BitTorrent.
The film, which came out in 1987, is being released as part of a bundle on the file-sharing service to commemorate the release of Peralta’s latest documentary, The Bones Brigade: An Autobiography.
The Bones Brigade was met with rave reviews at Sundance this year, and Peralta is now releasing Bones Brigade online. Peralta might be trying to swing for the fences as he drops his new documentary along with the free download of an already cult classic, and he very well me able to hit a home run.
In an email to Wired.com, Peralta was quoted as saying “I decided not to do a traditional distribution network around this film to help control the copyright and maintain ownership of the asset. I opted to partner with BitTorrent as it’s more in the independent film world and it comes with a great audience base.”
BitTorrent has been making quite a few deals with entertainment creators as of late, trying to help boos revenue and distribute the content. They recently partnered with DJ Shadow which led to the release of a few songs from his Total Breakdown: Hidden Transmissions From the MPC Era, 1992-1996 for example.
Matt Mason, BitTorrent’s executive marketing director, has said the company is “committed to working with the most imaginative creators out there,” and called working with Peralta “a true honor.”
Bones Brigade is currently being screened at select theaters and will next be shown Sept. 27 at the Oakland Underground Film Festival.
