Have you ever wondered what would happen if you painted a skatepark with light at night? Me either, but ben matthews did it and took some really amazing photography.

that’s how i vision skateboarding during the day
I just wasted a minute of my life that I will never get back…those pictures look like a second grader made them…dumb dumb dumb…why is this even on the web????
I would decide between bubble gum years and light painting, and then only put one of them up. I feel as though they are pretty similar and one of them is stronger than the other.
Dude this is like way cool.
Lou
Incredible! Beautiful set of photo’s. In the second to last is that how much the sky moved during the shot? Again, amazing stuff, hat’s off to all involved!
Top notch ! Great work, and must have taken a while to capture them all. Really captivating and original work dude !
What program is used to make these effects?
Sick Pictures
If I could see skateboarding like this all the time, I would never stop skating.
It’s great that you can use the stars as a gauge of how long it took to create.
dope pics… awesome stuff
nice pics!
@Thomas: The program is called a long exposure on your camera + flashlights.
woooooooooooooowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww:)
suppaaaaaa!!!!!!!!!
Wow man, these photos are so amazing. thank you for sharing this.
wow!! great work!
Unbelievable
Wow JAY, you know 2nd graders who understand Fstop vs. aperture, can operate a manual camera in bulb exposure, wind and release the film, drive themselves to a color processing lab, scan the film, edit the color, contrast, sharpness, and treatment, then post the images to the web? That is really amazing. You are an amazing person. Keep up the good work.
Jay…the negative nancy jay…. go get your mom to fuck with a rubber hose, with the water on so you can clean all that shit inside you, cuz it seems to be coming out your mouth. good job George, dope pics
Cool light effects man, nice low light shooting too. Good job, I personally like it.
What fun! i had forgotten about flashlight fun.
Cool venue for this.
c-mom
Absolutely gorgeous.
@Jay-You’re a faggot. Go troll other websites or better yet, never “grace” the internet with your presence ever again.
Super sick pictures.
Hey Jay…
As my grandma used to say.
FUCK YOU!
interesting scenes –
we all see and learn things each day, we never have seen or heared of before.
Just be relaxed and take it easy –
“even the lion has to defend himself against flies”
Carry on and never give up to stay tuned :o)
Be well –
Lou
@Jay, almost feel sorry for you struggling through life with a small mind. If the pictures were that offensive to you how did you even get through the whole post let alone spend more of your precious time writing a response?
ha ha ha, you really are a fool
@Thomas they used photoshop you dumbass. and these are shit. if you’re going to do something as over done as light painting, make it fucking interesting.
good style, I’ve done alot of shots like this but are those smoke bombs??? I like it…good idea, when do the firework stands open. I’m inspired.
Neat tricks.
There ought to be such a contest as well !
Jag tycker om de här konstnärliga ljusexperimenten!
Skulle vilja lära mig mer om hur man skapar ljuseffekter.
these are amazing, this has inspired me so much. dunno why you low blowers are even arguing on this cause what ben has done is insane. kudos man.
These are amazing photos, looks like twilight zone
Wow… I simply cannot get enough of the Jet Fueled pic! *drool*
I think you have to be a stoner.. AND a skater to truly enjoy this.
James and Jay are sipping on haterade because they are jealous this series of images gets more attention than their own wack ass light painting frolics. And Kevin, you might be right that being someone who smokes weed on the regs and skateboards on the regs would appreciate this more than someone who does not (i.e. James and Jay = L7). But then again, that sort of person is cooler than the average cat. A good clean fun night of patiently shooting with some friends! Looks like you guys had some fun! Kudos.
Tracers is # 1 in my opinion
I love this! As both a skater and photographer, I can truly appreciate the skills applied. I’m curious what kind of camera was used to shoot these and what f-stops & shutter speeds were used.
If you don’t mind me asking, just how long was your exposure? and how did you achieve the smokey light on the ground of some of the images? Also, I agree with Kevin on the first half but I think the latter half should say photographer not skater. Nicely done.
these are ok pics good ideas but with photoshop and some abstract brushes my 9 year old son could do these if not better.
Very nice I did the same kind of photo in my gr.11 photography class.
@ Chaos: I believe it involves long exposure times and sparklers, not photoshop and 9 year olds. Fucking idiot.
These are fantastic.
I just discovered light painting and love what you have done to create motion.
some are very eerie!!! i would love to know your flashlight tools…sparklers??
Keep up the great work.
I stumbled this, and shot in the dark, is this South Wonston skatepark?
This is just freaking cool!!!!!!!!
this is worse than poop on a stick
I wish there was actual skateboarding going on in this. This was …..ok?… meh.
The pictures are awesome. I am sure in case when there is a photo competition, these pics will get the contest prize.
This is very cool. Im loving the second picture!
is “jet fueled” a meth reference?
@the stupid dumb fucks who dont like this picture cause it looks “easy” …..its so easy to fuck up these pictures…dont leave the shutter open long enough, make one wrong shape that ruins it…you cant see what youre making while youre doing it you have to imagine and plan it first…and if there was a skateboarder in the picture you wouldnt be able to see them.
great work! what did you use in whirligig for the lighting?
the pic named ‘take flight’…
am i the only one to see a spread pair of legs, and a massive boner taking a dip?
dope pics anyway.
I have nothing negative to say. Nice job guys. I just want to second Ricky Flip. Cheers Mate.
I don’t understand why people were dissing this…I wish I could do this on my camera! So sick!
Great photoshop effects… I am using the lighting effects on my new shirt designs. (designer for Sex Sells Inc. Clothing) Great stuff.
these are awesome photos. not photoshopped. looks like sparklers and long exposures. good stuff. Thanks!!
Pretty good photography, but why take pictures in a skate park without including skateboarding? These are incredible shots, don’t get me wrong. There is no way I could even come close to getting shots like these. I just think that you could have gone a step further by including some skating in there.
Great job, though.
WHy is there not no a single skateboarder in any of these pics? They look cool and all, But why dont you give some skateers the lights and have them shread it up?
The pictures are beautiful! Too bad all the silly effects have ruined them all. The photos on their own are stunning long exposures, why you felt the need to add the amateur effects is beyond me. Please make the pics without the nonsense available for viewing, I would buy a few prints if the distracting light trails were removed. You have talent, please don’t cover it up with effects, these photos stand on their own as ART!
its called surreal skate park after dark for a reason, sick graphics fa sho.
you’re so cool
if your gonna light up a skate park, you should actually skate it
LEAVE THE SKATE PARKS ALONE YOU FUCKING HIPSTERS
Unbelievable that people think these are effects. You people are fucking dumb and should figure out what you’re talking about before you bash peoples creativity. Thanks for sharing!
These are fantastic shots; I tip my hat to you Ben… But those of you that are bashing on these should take a closer look at them. If you look closely at them and follow the individual lines, you will see the shapes of them (hint: look at the loops that are created at the peaks within the half pipe. Second from the bottom titled Jet Fueled) you will see that there is a very high chance that there were skaters involved. You just can’t see them due to the fact of the long exp time that is required for this type of photograph and the speed that they travel at. Without the light painting these images would have been flat and unattractive. The reason you can see the detail in the parks is due to the light that is being emitted from the sources that he used. Before you bash something that you see take some time to educate yourself on what you are seeing.
Kyle B. is exactly right. Stop bashing the pics and just enjoy them! Light painting and long exposure, good stuff!!
some people are so dumb….

Incredible photography. Well done my friend.
This is so rad!!!!!

Eric is a cunt. This photos are sick dude. I am actually doing my senior thesis for my BFA in Photography on skateboarding and utilizing light trails as a literal visual representation (for douchers like Eric) of how skateboarders perceive public spaces.
Keep Shooting!

Alright… I just got into lighting effects with photography and whoever says this isn’t art is FULL OF SHIT. haha, really though. It’s not easy to get shots like this. It truly is a work of art. It takes many exposures and different settings to try, you have to test the shutter speed and ISO over and over to get it just right. So please, don’t speak about something that you KNOW NOTHING ABOUT. :]
Painting with light…Love it. How long were you exposing for? Awesome shots! =D
well if you look on the picture titled Whirligig on the right side if you look closly enough you can see the faint trace of his arm so you know he was there hes just moving to fast for the lens
The photo titled “Jet Fueled” is pretty sweet. Only thing missing is somebody skating it.
